Playtime

I needed something to do that wasn’t mostly typing, drawing or otherwise abusing my aching wrists, and still of entertainment value- so between watching ROME, getting new braces for my wrists, and looking up voice-to-text software, I’ve been putzing around on these sites

Language is a virus dot com…

A decent little site with some toys aimed at creative writers -magnetic poetry without the mess!- and other interesting gadgets.

DaVinci drawings. Leonardo was a fantastic cartoonist, and spent a lot of time sketching and drawing. Some of these drawings are quite graphic in nature; Leonardo drew penises, boobs, dissections and more.

ouch

Just when I get the time to actually do a decent amount of writing and drawing done, have several projects rolling… my carpel-tunnel and tendonitis kick up, reducing me to a whimpering, profane mess that glares at her art supplies while her hands and wrists quiver, quake and generally behave in an annoying fashion.

It wasn’t so bad a few years ago, but I’ve noticed an increase in ‘painful’ eppisodes at home and work over the past three years, along with days I wear my braces to work. People have stopped asking about them.

I have a really, really comfy-cozy brace somewhere around here for use while typing, but I can’t find it (of course -these things vanish when you need them, and when I don’t, I’m tripping over them all the time).

The current eppisode was triggered by work-related-stress and stippling. Mostly stipple. I hate stippling but once I start doing it in a piece I can’t seem to stop myself from over-doing the work on my hands, and giving myself eyestrain as I stare at .005 micron-made dots on a piece of bristol.

Arts in the Classroom

What is the importance of Art in a school system? Art is an ephemeral thing; at first glance it simply isn’t as useful as the core classes- such as math and English. It is one of the first things usually cut when a state or school’s budget gets in trouble, and it’s easy to say that it doesn’t matter. Its just …art. Right?

According to the BNET research center, Art & Music can help build self-esteem, and may significantly help at-risk students, and the importance of Art and Music in Education and Health was the topic of a Stanford in March of 98 Conference, and the Abrakadoodle site cites several benefits of arts, especially in early childhood education, and its something even the visually impaired can enjoy and learn. It also may improve overall grades, According to Chris Borland and UMNS.

Art is another way we can communicate with each other, and can be used to express ourselves and our perceptions of the world, across time, space and culture. Art can be competitive, non-competitive, done co-operatively or alone. It can be made- or enjoyed- almost anywhere, and can be used to teach, as well as to learn. It can provide a cathartic release for pent-up emotions, provide a backdrop for experimentation and exploration, and has been done by humans since prehistoric times. Art is a uniquely human creation, and experience.

Coffee Painting

Took another quick picture of the coffee painting I’m currently working on. Its a small thing, but I’m really happy with how this piece is currently turning out. The bright dot to the left of the piece is my little heater…which I am using to speed up the painting’s drying process.

Bad Cider

Today at the Coffee Shop, I was informed that the cider had started to go bad, and therefore was  unfit for sale. It was decided that in the presence of markers, that the Bad Cider must be marked in a way to make it distinguishable from Good Cider.

Here’s the results: the Bad Cider (It kicks kittens!).
