Just some rambling on the topic of Hunting Sparkle Vamps.
There had been talk, once hunting got really hard, and sightings far, far rarer, about setting up a sanctuary for the vampires, and possibly giving them lepers to feed on and turn (Could you domesticate a vampire?). There had been talk of it; but the clergy said it was a disgusting, vile thing, and the vampires –demons that they were- should all be slaughtered, and while their skins and bones might be of use to mankind, there was no sense in saving them.
So. Even as the sightings got fewer, hunting continued unabated. The bounty for a pelt increased from a few dollars, to a weeks’ pay to a month’s pay or more in some areas. People set out with hooks and guns and knives and dogs, their fervor increased by the prize of the hide which could be sold to feed a family during the rough winters.
A vampire’s senses were keen. They were fast. They were strong. They could lure women (and men) from homes to drink their blood and leave nothing but ravaged corpses behind. They were beautiful predators. They were excellent at what they did.
But humans were hunters as well.
And while vampires were fast, and fierce and cunning, few, if any, could survive decapitation.

Made using PhotoshopCS4 and InDesignCS4
So. I recently capitulated and got Adobe’s Creative Suite CS4, design premium. In addition to now being a slave to this massive collection of what seems to be half a million plus of programs that can do anything under the sun except clean the cat’s litter box and make dinner, I’ve had some time off to start tinkering with it and reading my For Dummies books on it. I am extremely happy with this shiny new toy. The image on this page was made by going back and forth a few times between Photoshop CS4 and InDesignCS4.

First off, a wikipedia link, on psychology and art, which gives a rough overview of the topic; which is: that crossroads where art and psych meet; something I’m somewhat interested in.
Artwork, as a creative output of the mind, can be viewed from the psychological perspective as another form of symbolic communication with the world; indeed, in the arts, often times art is viewed as a form of communication and commentary between the artist and the world.
–and I wish I hadn’t missed the chance to enter this competition.
Added a ton of psych/art/bio books to my amazon wish list about not only what we see but also how we see it and our symbolic makeup.
Symbols are fluid things and they change with time and culture; as we age and as our society does, symbols change. Some go in style, some fall out of style, and part of making effective art -or design- work includes knowing what you’re saying with those symbols and how they are likely to be read by the public.

Hi guys, long time no post!
Anyhow, here’s an article that was forwarded to me about sketching and memory. I tend to sketch when I’m alert and relaxed; faces, random things, more random things, etc… especially while in class. I’ve had trouble where people assumed that I was not paying attention while sketching, even if I was (and still had copious amounts of text notes as well as the massive doodles in the margins.

So, I got some new shiny toys to make art with (Woo!)- a Cintiq and a canon scanner round out the collection of ’stuff’ that began with the red laptop. And to all of you who were wondering? I think the cintiq IS that awesome, and wonderful, beyond the much-remarked upon cording -but that’s not too horribly bad. The scanner’s a canon Lide200, which is about the same size as the cintiq, and the scanner, laptop and cintiq can all fit into my backpack, should I feel a need to travel about (though it wouldn’t be light!).
In other news, winter has come to the land, as evidenced by the coming of snow, and the passing of thanksgiving :

God help me. I bought that book. Twilight. With the sparkly, diamond-encrusted vampires. The ones that sparkle in sunlight.
And then I got to thinking.
Undead creatures. With diamond-like skin. During the fur-trade, there HAD to be a market for vampire skins. Vampire skin purses, bags, dresses. It would’ve been cheaper and easier to get than sequined shit…. And the best part would be hunting them. You’d go out into the wilderness with a light of some sort, look for the shine, and BAMBAMBAM! Got a nice new sparkly purse for your girlfriend.
Obviously this is why vampires in the twilight-verse are rare. The truth? They were hunted to be made into luxury items.

Rootfireember Some people have tried to captive-breed sparklevamps for the fur industry, but to no avail. We don’t want to know their methods. Ever.
|
|
 |
Rootfireember Sparklevamps now being protected under CITES treaties, and hunting being only allowed with a permit. .
|
|
 |
Rootfireember In addition, in some backwater areas, Vampire shining is still a popular pastime, though shooting them is illegal.

|
 |
Rootfireember Secretly, there is a lucrative black market trade of goods made of sparklevamp skin, especially ladies handbags.

Working on a project involving werewolves, looking at getting a new computer and a cintiq next year, and currently glaring at the trees around here that the city planted. Now, these trees do look pretty. They also produce enough pollen in later months to make the city streets look like they’re covered in snow and are an irritant to my sinuses, and are great homes for invader/pest species.
As far as summers go, it has not been that hot, all things considered. Just humid, and bright, with very little rain. Species of animals which were once much rarer are now pretty commonplace. Opossums seem to have out-competed skunks for the scavenger niche, at least in town, and redpolls, cardinals and some robins are now staying year around instead of stopping by on migration. Terns, once a rare visitor, have now made appearances in the bay for 3 years in a row, along with cormorants, and coyote numbers are increasing. I haven’t had time to compare this to Audubon society records, but the ecology up here is definitely changing.

I will be attending the Wizard World Convention in Chicago on Friday and Saturday, I plan to be hanging out with Whitechapel folks and lurking about the Avatar booth, and just plain wandering around. This will be my first convention.
